[Duo stares off at the stars, at where home should be, and shakes his head.] I've found no evidence whatsoever of any imPorts from our world have been here before me. [It's not a lie.] There are imPorts like the Cybertronians, of course, who might as well be the same living concept, but...
...Riptide seemed to think that if they'd existed in this universe, he would have heard of something. Or seen some evidence... And if that's what it was, I think he'd know, too. With all the alien and space-faring imPorts that have been here before, I think that if something was out there, and coming here, we'd have known by now.
[He shakes his head.] I think this is Earthsphere-born. Whatever it is.
[He nods, taking his shady friend at face value, and immediately discounts the idea that this is another mobile suit or five. The Cybertronians (still an amazing concept) wouldn't be involved either, unless it was an imPort. Which is all good news; it means they're presumably dealing with something manmade along this world's level of technology, which means they're better suited to do something about it.]
So probably the organization that launched the satellites, or someone working with them.... [It's hard, still getting used to this world's level of technology. He has no idea what's reasonable to suspect.] If not a suit... mining for something? They haven't discovered Gundanium yet, and wouldn't be able to extract it if they had. We might be able to intercept the materials if we can map the trajectory, or at least see who goes to pick them up.
[Duo nods slowly, pieces of the puzzle flitting behind his eyes. From those satellites.... it was definitely OTO. Had to be. And from the level of technology they've previously shown, something along the lines of space manufacture was certainly possible. Where, that was a difficult question; even in their own world, manufacture and mining took place at so many different points of their solar system that it was a needle in a haystack in the undeveloped space frontier of this world- even without colonies.]
[The question then became, what were they hiding in this "meteor shower", and what did they stand to gain from bringing it to Earth now? Never before the satellites had their plots on imPorts or this country seemed so blatantly intent to kill... If they wanted to continue using imPorts to their advantage, then turning to hostage-taking threats like that of an orbital laser was a leap past that. Of course their connection to Russia was the obvious reason for outright hostility, but why jump to this level of aggression now?]
[Duo grumbles, and rubs a hand over his face.] I tried takin' a look with some of the high power telescopes I snuck my way into here, can't see nothin'. Whatever it is, it's real well hidden, or just not close enough yet.
--We don't even know how fast whatever it is can reach orbit. Might not even have launched yet.
[He doesn't even blink at the reveal that Duo just. snuck some high power telescopes into this building. Why wouldn't he? You gotta keep an eye on space.]
The "meteor" is due to hit the atmosphere shortly before dawn, Eastern Standard Time. [It's the only fact they know, unfortunately, but Duo's right; he has no idea how fast this thing is moving, or when to expect it.] It'll probably be too late to mobilize if we wait here until we can see it. [Then he frowns.] Duo, what's even up there to launch something in this universe? [He's been taking that question for granted, because he's so used to there being plenty of potential sources up there. He has to actively remind himself that there shouldn't be anything, besides what the imPorts had put up there.] --This couldn't be coming from the moon base, could it?
[Duo hums] Lunar launch's cutting it close, right? --I guess they could, theoretically, get away with it. Not as much surveillance as we're used to.
But-- jeez, that'd only give a couple hours at most for us to detect and intercept. [Duo grumbles. He knows the trip from L2 like the back of his eyelids, but this was a different world, with different technology. While that would theoretically give them more time than they're used to, they had no idea what they were looking for.]
...I've only been to the base once, but under imPort scrutiny, how they could hide something like that in a fledgling base..... Mm, I guess it's possible there's hidden facilities. [He frowns. He really should have stuck around, made sure everything there was to it. He'd inspected as much as he could at that opening, but...] ...Only one way to find out.
