[Duo does have, let's say, a fixation on death mythologies from all over. That's not to say he knows the intimate details of every one, but he's familiar enough with the major concepts. After all, it's how he came across 'Shinigami', myths passed around the children of the colonies.]
[This was ...interesting. Very interesting. Someone that has died, over and over, to be reborn in the service of a higher power. It felt very ...familiar, in a way, even though it wasn't. They were all the playthings of these gods. Lachesis, foremost, but he wasn't hers. She hadn't been the first to claim him.]
[The Shinigami were bored. That's what Mello had said. In Greek myths, gods always acted out of ennui and self-interest. And so, it appeared, did the Norse.]
I'm familiar.
[Sorry, Deedee. If you don't even know what "Shinigami" really means, you're not close enough for him to share so much of himself, yet. And besides, he's trying to keep it together a little better, in this place.]
[It's a tricky question, given what conflicting information he's been able to find on the topic. Most commonly, it appeared that a Shinigami was thought to be something of a grim reaper - Father Maxwell certainly couldn't fit that bill, could he? All of the logic that D33 possesses is telling him no, and yet here is this man who, when present, reveals himself only to D33, who seems to know everything, who dresses in all black, etc., etc.
[In this world, who is to say what might and might not be possible? It's only a fleeting thought-- Alright, well. Maybe a bit more than fleeting. But D33 is pretty sure that that can't be the case.
[That can't be the case, right?]
I didn't believe in many of the things that I have come to encounter within this world.
[Honestly, Duo still wasn't sure yet. There was a lot about this kid he still hadn't managed to grasp, not just yet, although he was getting there. But with the minutia he knew, with how he seemed to relate to other people so far...]
Are you implying that I might somehow become one of these "gods of death"?
[Surely that can't be right - Dammit, Shinigami, why do you always have to be so confusing? Just when D33 feels that he's beginning to understand something about you, you take another turn.]
[Normally he might have a little more to say about it (or at the very least he'd try to be a little more implicit about the whole thing), but, again, he's tired. And also just about done with Duo's bullshit (always).]

You don't believe in "Shinigami", though, do you?

[He doesn't think D33 gets it, yet. Or knows. That's fine. After all... She isn't here. But he would. He would, if she returned to this place.]
[It was for the best that She wasn't. Either of them.]
Thanks for the tips, kiddo. I'll keep it in mind.

All you've told me so far is that if I was one I would know it.
Clearly I am not.

Well then, I suppose you aren't one.

Maybe you'll see for yourself one day.

I don't think it works that way. Although I've met some who did, actually, become Shinigami after they died.

Would such be your case, Shinigami?
[That is to say:]
Have you died before?
no subject
No.
[It was never him.]
no subject
Why?

Believe it or not, Deedee, I'm in the middle of things that don't involve you.

[Transmitted to Dee is a ciphered file of text- not a lot of it, but a paragraph or so. Good luck puzzling it out.]
For you to chew on, Mr. No One Else Has A Life.

Very well.
